THE HARVEST-TO-HANDOFF FIELDBOOK / Follow the harvest

A retail floor is another receiving environment.

A produce bin that reaches a store still has to fit the store’s actual handling and presentation requirements.

Ask the store for its requirements

Confirm space, access, presentation and handling expectations before selecting a design. Tell the supplier whether the container is intended to remain on display. Keep retailer instructions with the packaging brief.

Confirm the full design

Discuss artwork, dimensions, components and any presentation opening with the supplier. Do not improvise alterations to an industrial container. Ask the responsible parties to review the final configuration for the intended operation.

Plan the empty container route

Identify who owns the container after use and how the store separates or returns it. A display’s appearance does not establish that it is reusable for another produce shipment. Confirm the next route explicitly.
